Bold, Expressive Brand Design Is Back — Why Cookie-Cutter Templates Are Killing Your Credibility
2026's biggest identity trend is louder, chunkier, more crafted brand design. If your Canva brand still looks like everyone else's, it's not neutral — it's actively costing you.
Strong brand design is having a moment — the kind of moment you can feel in the gut before you can explain it. Louder colour contrasts. Chunky, confident fonts. Textured layers that feel crafted by a human. Identities that look like someone made a decision, not picked a preset.
UK studio KOTA and The Branding Journal both call this out as 2026’s dominant trend. I see it every week in my own inbox. Founders who used to turn up with “clean, minimal, a bit like Apple” are now asking for something that actually feels like them. Warmer. Weirder. More expressive.
Why flat template brands are losing ground
The reason is simple: too many brands now look the same. Canva, Squarespace and AI-generated identities have made a certain “clean modern” look free and ubiquitous. Which means it no longer signals taste or investment. It signals default.
If your brand identity looks like the template for your industry, you’ve made yourself invisible to the exact people you want to stand out to. Credibility doesn’t come from looking like everyone else anymore. It comes from looking like you chose this on purpose.
Sensory, not just seen
The other shift is a move from visual to sensory branding. Brands want to be felt — through texture, motion, photography, sound. This is very much my territory. Photography and identity design aren’t separate lines on an invoice; they’re two sides of the same creative direction. A well-designed mark sitting next to a flat stock photo will always feel a bit off. A well-designed mark sitting next to a considered brand photography library feels inevitable.
What this means for you
If your brand was built in a hurry, from a template, or by stitching together different freelancers — 2026 is the year the cracks show. The good news is this is exactly the kind of work I love. A real identity, built from strategy up, in a voice and look that belongs only to you.
